How To Paint Vinyl Railings

The best part of your deck is the outside area that everyone can enjoy. If you have railings or stairs, they are essential to the overall experience. However, over time vinyl railings lose their vibrancy and become dull. Fortunately, there are steps to follow when painting vinyl railings so you can restore them both quickly and easily. Below are seven tips on how to paint your vinyl railings.

Ensure proper preparation

Before you begin any project, it is necessary to ensure that every surface is clean and dry – especially with good adhesion in mind. Use a solution of mild dish soap (not something like Palmolive) combined with water (about 1/2 cup to every gallon). Wash the railing, allow it to dry completely, and you are ready to go.

Purchase supplies

After preparing your railing, use a tape measure to ascertain how much paint you need. You can buy any paint at almost any hardware store. Do not scrimp on quality – if you do this job once. We guarantee that you will want it done again in a few years! To further ensure an even finish and avoid drips (and general mess), purchase a 2 inch angled brush and some high-density painters masking tape. You can also have liquid dish soap, fine steel wool pads, rust converter/sealer, disposable plastic gloves, old newspapers or drop cloths, screwdrivers, utility knives.

Begin with the masking tape

Start by taping off all of your railings with lots of painter’s tape. Press it down firmly so there are no gaps or spaces where paint can seep through onto other areas. If it is windy out (or you plan on using a spray gun), then consider using another layer of regular masking tape over the first to ensure that any paint does not get blown into undesired areas.

Spray or roll

If you have purchased enamel paint, realize that this is designed for either rolling or spraying – never both! Before you start applying any paint, read the label carefully, indicating which method it is intended for. If you are using oil-based paint, do not even think about rolling it on – this will cause problems! For the sake of your railings, spray or roll as indicated by the label. We will always guide you on the best painting approach for our PolyRail vinyl railing.

Apply the primer

With all surfaces covered with masking tape, apply an even coat of primer. Allow this to dry thoroughly before removing the tape and applying the finish coats in whichever manner you choose.

Apply The paint

As the final step in the painting process, ensure that you remove all masking tape and otherwise complete all preparations. Then apply 3 – 4 equally-spaced coats of paint to your vinyl railing/staircase for maximum attractiveness! Allow the layers to dry before applying another one. Feel free to sand lightly between coats with fine steel wool pads if necessary or desired.
