Founded in 1954 by Bernard Goodman, Sherwood Lumber began with a team of just three employees serving approximately 125 customers from a small office in Roslyn, New York. From the very beginning, Bernard believed that success was built on exceptional customer service, strong relationships, and maintaining inventory that allowed customers to receive the products they needed—when they needed them. Those principles remain the foundation of the company more than 70 years later.
In 1978, Bernard’s son, Andrew Goodman, joined the business as Vice President. Over the following four decades, Andrew became CEO and helped transform Sherwood from a regional lumber wholesaler into one of North America’s premier distributors of specialty and commodity building materials. Through strategic expansion, disciplined growth, and a relentless focus on customer service, Sherwood significantly expanded its product offerings, supplier relationships, and geographic reach.
In 2025, Sherwood proudly entered its third generation of family leadership when Michael Goodman was named President. Alongside his brothers, Joshua Goodman and Aytan Goodman, the Goodman family continues to build on a legacy of integrity, entrepreneurship, and long-term partnerships while investing in technology, operational excellence, strategic acquisitions, and the next generation of industry leadership.
Today, Sherwood Lumber employs more than 150 associates and operates offices in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Florida, Oregon, and Canada. The company serves more than 2,000 lumber dealers, building material distributors, manufacturers, and industrial customers throughout North America, sourcing products from environmentally responsible producers around the world.
