Most people think a log enters a sawmill and becomes lumber. In reality, lumber is often just one of many products created from a single tree. Modern mills are designed to maximize recovery, meaning nearly every part of the log is converted into something useful. Depending on the species, size, and quality of the log, only about 45% to 65% of the log’s volume may become finished lumber. The rest is transformed into products that serve industries ranging from construction and packaging to paper manufacturing and renewable energy.
1. Dimensional Lumber
The largest share of value usually comes from dimensional lumber. After the bark is removed, the log is sawn into boards such as 2x4s, 2x6s, and 2x10s that are used to build homes, apartments, and commercial structures. This is the product most people think of when they hear the word lumber.
2. Timbers
Large diameter logs can be sawn into heavy timbers used in agricultural buildings, commercial construction, bridges, and specialty projects. These products require larger trees and are often sold into niche markets.
3. Veneer
High quality logs may be peeled or sliced into thin sheets of wood called veneer. These sheets are used to manufacture furniture, cabinets, doors, and decorative panels. Because veneer requires exceptional logs, it is often one of the highest value products a tree can produce.
4. Plywood
Many veneer sheets are glued together to create plywood panels used in construction, roofing, flooring, and industrial applications. A single veneer log can produce thousands of square feet of plywood.
5. Pallets and Crating
Lower grade boards that may not be ideal for construction are often used to manufacture pallets, crates, and industrial packaging. More than 90% of goods shipped in the United States travel on pallets at some point in the supply chain.
6. Engineered Wood Products
Smaller pieces of lumber and wood fiber can be transformed into products such as laminated beams, I-joists, LVL, and structural panels. These products allow manufacturers to make use of material that might otherwise have limited value.
7. Wood Chips
As logs are squared and trimmed, large amounts of material are removed. These slabs and offcuts are processed into wood chips rather than being discarded. In many mills, chips account for roughly 20% to 30% of the original log volume.
8. Paper and Cardboard
Many wood chips are sold to pulp mills where they are converted into paper products, cardboard boxes, packaging materials, and tissue products. Everyday items that seem unrelated to lumber often begin with the same log.
9. Sawdust and Wood Pellets
Every cut made by a saw blade creates sawdust. Large mills can generate hundreds of tons of sawdust each week. This material is commonly used for animal bedding, particleboard manufacturing, and compressed wood pellets used for heating and energy production.
10. Mulch and Biomass Energy
The bark removed from the log often becomes mulch and landscaping products. Any remaining low value wood fiber may be used as biomass fuel to generate heat and electricity. In many mills, this helps power the manufacturing process itself.
Why It Matters
A modern sawmill is not simply a lumber producer. It is a facility designed to extract value from every possible piece of wood fiber. The lumber used to frame a home, the cardboard used to ship products, the mulch in a flower bed, and the pellets used to heat a building can all originate from the same tree. The next time you see a log truck heading to a mill, remember that it is not delivering raw material for one product. It is delivering raw material for ten.
